From the Publisher— You may have heard about the controversy over a certain "memoir" that reached bestseller status after Oprah Winfrey showcased it in her book club—and whose readers' faith in its seemingly searing honesty shattered into a million little pieces when many of its dramatic components were found to be—well—fiction. Many in the book and publishing industries questioned whether publishers had a responsibility to fact-check books they released as nonfiction. How can readers be sure that what the narratives that are sold as memoir really happened to the authors? After all, doesn't it make a difference to know that what they're reading really happened to someone? Here at Pearlsong Press we've published two memoirs, Anne Richardson Williams's spiritually oriented Unconventional Means and Pattie Thomas, Ph.D's sociological case study of her own life, Taking Up Space. (Another memoir, Beyond Measure, by Ellen Frankel, will be published in fall 2006). And I can tell you unequivocally that these books are true. Now, in Unconventional Means you can make up your own mind about the ultimate truth of the Aboriginal Australian stories that author Anne Williams transcribed from the teachings of Aboriginal elder Lorraine Mafi-Williams. But I can tell you that what Anne writes about her travels to and in Australia, and the visions and dreams leading up to—and after—that journey, really happened. But you don't have to take my word for it. You can see for yourself. The eBook edition of Unconventional Means contains a bonus section not included in the original trade paperback edition: a scrapbook of photos from and about Anne's journey, including one of Lorraine in the Radnor Lake T-shirt Anne was guided to give her, and the photos of Anne's son playing "toss the moss" with a dolphin on a childhood vacation, about which Anne mused while in Australia. When I was editing the eBook (which contains the original layout and page design of the paperback edition, with color versions of Anne's illustrations substituted for the black & white versions of the paperback), I thought it'd be fun to add a "bonus feature" along the lines of the extra goodies included in the DVD releases of popular films. Hence the photo scrapbook, which is at the end of the eBook. Only recently did I realize that this photo e-scrapbook actually validates much of Anne's story. (At least, the outer events—we have no photos of Anne's dreams.) And in the wake of the controversy about that other "memoir," I thought this worth publicizing. So check it out, if you wish. The eBook is available at the discounted price of $9.50 on the Pearlsong Press website. As for our other memoir, Taking Up
Space—the original trade paperback already contains numerous
photos from author Pattie Thomas's life. And as editor of the book, I can
tell you that I utilized not only my background in English and journalism
(B.A. in both, with several years' work as a newspaper reporter, editor,
and columnist) but my M.S. and Ph.D. in psychology and training in a
scientist/practitioner model to edit with an eye not only for literary
style but scientific accuracy.
You don't have to take just my word for that, though. Check out the praise for Taking Up Space by numerous health professionals, academics, and size acceptance activists at the Pearlsong Press website. Other praise and reviews can be read at the Pearlsong Press blog. Enjoy!
